Popular reality TV-inspired movie Dad Where Are We Going 2 is set to show in Malaysia, and it is all thanks to Malaysian cast member Gary Chaw and his two children Joe and Grace. The Sabah-born Taiwan-based singer-songwriter and his children shot to fame when they took part in Season Two of Dad Where Are We Going, a smash-hit mainland Chinese reality TV show about celebrity fathers and their children. The series, based on a South Korean format, was so popular that movie versions are filmed after the end of every season. Chaw’s image as a good father received a major boost after his participation in Dad Where Are We Going 2 (known in Mandarin as Ba Ba Qu Na Er or 爸爸去哪儿2). At a recent press conference in Petaling Jaya to announce a special carnival for the movie, he revealed: “ After Dad Where Are We Going 2 became a hit, more people have gotten to know me. My workload has increased, and I’m also earning more than before. ” The newly-minted reality show star expressed gratitude to China’s Hunan TV for his new status. “Whether it is Dad Where Are We Going or I Am A Singer, as long as they call me, I will be back. ” After some prodding, Chaw disclosed that he was about to start shooting a cameo in the upcoming third season of Dad Where Are We Going. When it comes to his parenting style, Chaw admitted to being a strict father. He gave an insight into his two children. “Joe has a great attitude, ” said Chaw of his six-year-old son. “He is congenial and is especially good at taking care of others. The experience on the show has helped him grow. “Grace was only three-and-a-half years old during the shoot but has a mind of her own. So no one could make her do anything she didn’t want to. ” According to Chaw, Joe and Grace have become so popular that offers keep pouring in for them to become child stars. But, being a protective father, Chaw’s main concern is for his children’s well-being. “I have declined all of the offers. I have no intention of letting them become child stars. I would rather not have them acting at such a young age. It’s much too hard. The most important thing for children is to be happy. If they want to venture into acting when they grow up, then I will respect their wishes. But for now, they need to return to everyday life. ” This weekend, Chaw, 35, will walk the red carpet with his adorable children Joe and Grace, now 4, at the movie premiere of Dad Where Are We Going 2 to be held at KL StarXpo Centre, KWC Fashion Mall (formerly known as Kenanga Wholesale City). “Malaysia is the only country premiering Dad Where Are We Going 2, apart from China and Fiji where parts of the movie were filmed. It’ll also have a bonus extended version, some 12 to 15 minutes of extra footage, only for Malaysian audiences. ” Also starring in the movie are three other celebrity dads from China and their children who appeared in Season Two of the series: actor-director Huang Lei and daughter Christine (also known as Duoduo), actor-singer Lu Yi and his daughter Belle (or Bei Er), and gymnast Yang Wei and his son YYY (Yang Yangyang). At press time, organisers Unipix International and Galaxy Group have confirmed five screenings in Kuala Lumpur and three in Penang. All five showings of the film in Kuala Lumpur will be held at KL StarXpo Centre, KWC Fashion Mall on May 30 and 31. Showtimes for May 30 (Sat) are 11am and 5pm; while May 31 (Sun) are 11am, 3pm and 7pm. Tickets are priced at RM35, except to the special red carpet show at 5pm on May 30 (Sat) which are priced at RM133 (VIP), RM93 (Green Zone) and RM63 (Blue Zone). The three shows in Penang will take place at Lim Lean Teng Hall, Han Chiang High School on June 21. Tickets are priced at RM35 and showtimes are 11am, 3pm and 7pm. For ticket reservation or gala enquiries, call Galaxy (03-2282 2020) or Unipix () or Buy Tickets (). The first 100 early bird movie fans at each showtime will receive free goodie bags, available while stocks last. Recipients will get an e-mail with goodie bag redemption details.
